Defend the Yellowstone Grizzly at a Defining Moment

Grizzly protections face their greatest risk in decades. A reopened lawsuit in Idaho could strip Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections nationwide, giving states the green light for trophy hunts and population reductions of up to 80 to 90 percent.

In 2024, Save the Yellowstone Grizzly (SYG) won a landmark federal settlement requiring the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to rewrite its national recovery plan by January 2026. This was a major victory for science and conservation, but it also triggered a new wave of opposition. The State of Idaho, as a defendant in the case, has made it clear that it intends to weaken or overturn these protections once the new plan is complete.

SYG is now preparing for the critical court fight ahead, which will determine whether grizzlies remain protected under the ESA or face open hunting seasons for the first time in nearly 50 years. This is the front line of grizzly conservation, and the outcome will shape their future for generations.
